After a long hiatus, we provide the following update of recent jury verdicts. We will post an update on EEOC verdicts and settlements next week. More after the break.
IL – A jury awarded $200,000 to a Cook County police officer who claimed he was harassed on the job because of his race.
KY – A jury returned a verdict in favor of the Fayette County School System in a reverse discrimination suit by a former principal.
NJ – A police officer who alleged racial discrimination and harassment was awarded $1.9 million by a jury. The court later reduced the award to $300,000 and awarded $76,010 in attorneys’ fees.
TN – A federal jury found for the employer in an “associational harassment” case brought by an employee.
CT – A jury returned a $157,000 verdict in favor of five of the eight police officers who alleged they were racially discriminated against by the town of Greenwich with regards to pay and promotions.
WV – A miner was awarded $885,107 in compensatory damages and $1 million in punitive damages by a jury when he was terminated in retaliation for filing a workers’ compensation claim.
CA – Five employees were awarded $370 million in damages on their counterclaims of defamation and harassment against their former employer who had accused them of embezzlement.
FL – A jury found for the defendant in a gender discrimination and retaliation suit brought by a former deputy who accused her superior of firing her after she complained of discrimination.
FL – A jury returned an award of $85,000 for a former employee who claims he was sexually harassed by two co-workers on the job.
NJ – A jury awarded $1.8 million to a former employee in a reasonable accommodations case.
WI – A jury awarded $750,000 to two female employees who alleged they were subject to discrimination in the workplace.
NY – A security guard was awarded $500,000 by a federal jury in a sexual harassment and retaliation case. The jury rejected the sexual harassment claim but found he had been subject to retaliation.
MI – A jury awarded $131,000 to a police officer in a reverse discrimination case.
NY – A federal court awarded $604,589 in damages to a former corrections officer who was fired in retaliation for filing a sexual harassment suit.
MI – A jury awarded $1.1 million to a former animal control officer who alleged retaliation by police officers.
CT – A former employee of the town of Griswold was awarded $1.3 million in damages for retaliation in violation of the state’s whistleblower act.
TN – A jury returned a $650,000 verdict in favor of two former city workers who alleged they were retaliated against for complaining about racist comments in the workplace.
GA – In a reverse discrimination case, a federal jury awarded $75,000 in punitive damages to a city official who alleged he was fired due to his race.
TX – A federal jury returned a nearly $1 million verdict for a former restaurant manager who claimed age discrimination.
IL – A federal jury awarded $350,000 to a former police lieutenant who claimed he was retaliated against for speaking out about racial issues in the workplace.
NY – A judge overturned the jury’s $15 million verdict in favor of a nurse who alleged sexual harassment by a doctor at the hospital where she worked.
FL – A jury awarded $4.9 million to a woman whose racial discrimination case was dismissed due to her lawyer’s mistake.
